I want to talk about a very serious topic for a minute. Why posting this in a fun cartoon forum is beyond me, but anyway:
There was this moment during my early college years where I would meet a cartoonist who would attend an art school and hope to one day work for Avatar. His level of work was on par with what Avatar was, and with his A- average he felt very confident in his ability to animate. I mentioned I had the same goals, that I myself would personally want to create my own cartoon show. He was intrigued and asked to see my work, so I showed him one that I had a personal attatchment to, Robot and Dog. Needless to say, he was not impressed. I say needless to say, even though he did in fact say those exact words. "I am not impressed.."
"This is not TV material"
"It looks like a kid drew this"
"Did you even try?"
To top it all off, he said "I personally don't think you can't do it. Producers will be looking for artists, if not from college, with a solid art portfollio that looks amazing."
I have not talked to him since then. This was one of the reasons I've made work privately and never shared anything for 3 years, if any, although I was to blame for actually falling for trash talk like that.
I would just like to say that I know this is not the first time somebody has made harsh unfair critisism like this. If somebody judges your work, but makes empty claims like 'trying' and 'the ability to do it' should not even be CONSIDERED by you. This is somebody who put so much time into their work, that they believe if it doesn't look like their form of 'art', it should be thrown away. What they don't realize is, so many others have worked hard on their own work, taking time to make it look like something completely different from what they see. I have seen so many people in this forum alone that have charming, brilliant, and fun stuff to look at, and knowing someone can be put down by stuff like this really tears at my heart. Keep just making cartoons or music or whatever you make, and don't let any threats bring you down.
Thanks for putting up with me, this may be one of those things I may regret putting up, but I'm putting it up anyway.
